Method for designing protocol controller integrated circuits each implementing a set of predetermined functions with a structured basis, especially data communication protocol management functions within a motor vehicle. The method comprises, for each circuit, an initial step of synthetic description of a circuit according to predetermined functions using a very high description level (VHDL), followed by a step of synthesis and compilation in order, on the one hand, to process the description data resulting from the said synthetic description step and, on the other hand, to integrate the cells corresponding to predetermined common functions, the said cells being stored in advance in at least one cell library (4), and in order to generate simulation information which is then processed in the course of a synthetic routing step in order to generate a topography (S) which is optimised for the circuit to be designed. Use for the design of circuits specific to communication and to data processing within motor vehicles. <IMAGE>
