PURPOSE: To minimize the formation of hot spots and to prevent start damages to a laser optical equipment by supplying power to a gain medium beforehand at a level lower than minimum laser power and sufficiently high to set a stable heat lens. CONSTITUTION: Two flash lamps 21 are arranged on the opposite side of a rod 10 and connected to a controller 23. The intensity and frequency of the flashes of the flash lamps 21 are controlled. A resonator mirror 24 is placed near in the vicinity the opposite to a laser rod 10. In a start routine, the flash lamps 21 supply the power smaller than a PL (minimum laser power) to the gain medium over the temperature elevation time. When the rod 10 reaches thermal equilibrium, the power output of the flash lamps 21 is increased over the PL, while allowing a device to output a desired laser wavelength. By the start routine, formation of the hot spots of the gain medium is prevented, and the problem of optical coating damages at the time of the laser start is eliminated. |
