PURPOSE:To provide a nonaqueous electrolyte battery having a large discharge capacity and an excellent cycle characteristic by providing a negative electrode material doped with a large amount of lithium and a manufacturing method for the material. CONSTITUTION:The negative electrode of a nonaqueous electrolyte battery is made of graphitization-resistant carbon composed mainly of carbon, phosphorus and oxygen, or coke (readily graphitizable carbon). The phosphorus content of the carbon is 0.2 to 9.0wt.%. The negative electrode material has a peak at + or -100ppm in a <31>P nucleus solid NMR spectrum with reference to orthophosphoric acid and a peak of 135.0eV in a phosphorus atom 2(p) orbit spectum at XPS. The negative electrode material is manufactured by adding phosphoric acid or phosporus oxides, etc., to organic material or carbonaceous material, and baking this mixture. The nonaqueous electrolyte battery comprises the negative electrode material, a positive electrode containing Li, and electrolyte. |
