PURPOSE:To minimize deterioration of recording characteristics of the subject device after long-term use. CONSTITUTION:The abrasion state of a head 1 for recording a signal to a magnetic tape 2 is detected by a head use judging means 6. The device is then constituted to give an optimum value of a recording current by controlling the gains of a signal amplifier circuit 12 and a bias amplifier circuit 14 by an optimum current instructing means 9 from an actual used time of the head 1 calculated by a head using time integrating means 7 and a data of a storage means 8 stored with a relationship between a using time and its optimum recording current.
