PURPOSE:To precisely detect the electric field distribution of a latent image and to improve contrast and image quality by forming a latent image by the use of a prestored pattern and detecting the electric field distribution of the latent image by the use of a means with specified electro-optical characteristics. CONSTITUTION:A unit 23 for detecting the electric field distribution of the latent image is provided with a laminated body which is laminated with glass substrates 1 and 4 disposed on both sides, a dielectric mirror 2 disposed next to the glass substrate 1 on the side of a photosensitive drum 31, a liquid crystal 3 disposed next to the mirror 2 and provided with the electro-optical characteristics for which optical properties are changed according to the strength of an electric field and a transparent electrode 32 such as ITO interposed between the liquid crystal 3 and the glass substrate 4 on the other side. This unit 23 is provided between the exposure part and development part and detects the electric field distribution of the latent image formed on the drum 31. A latent image forming means is controlled based on the result of the detection. |
