In prepn. of caprolactam by Beckmann conversion of cyclohexanone oxime with oleum at 70-130 deg.C, in at least 1 stage, the reaction mixt. is held for 10-600 mins. at 70-110 deg.C in a post-residence zone. Conversion is at 108-118 deg.C in 2 or 3 stages, with addn. to the 1st stage of all the oleum and 60-95 pts. of cyclohexanone oxime, and addn. of 40-5 pts. of the oxime to the latter stages. The mixt. is held in the post-residence zone for 15-180 mins., at 90-100 deg.C.
