The discharge lamp has a hairpin heating wire acting as one lamp electrode (16) positioned at one end of the lamp envelope (2) co-operating with a second electrode (9) at the opposite end of the lamp envelope (2). Each arm (14,15) of the heating electrode (16) is coupled to a respective current lead (12,13) via a sealing foil (10,11). The heating current is supplied via the parallel current leads (12,13) before the lamp is ignited with the ignition voltage subsequently applied between these leads (12,13) and the current lead (6) for the second lamp electrode (9), with the heating electrode (16) acting as a normal electrode after lamp ignition.
