The monitoring appts. includes a control space (10) formed by gas and liquid tight seals. A sensor tube (8) in the chamber is connected to a pump with which a transport medium, esp. an inert gas such as dried air, is pumped through the space. A sensor also connected to the tube responds to at least one material which is being monitored for. There is also a device (9) for introducing a drying agent into the chamber. USE/ADVANTAGE - For sealing and monitoring rubbish dump with double leak protection. Ensures relatively accurate leak location even when certain amount of moisture penetrates into dump over long period.
