An engine starter (10) is provided in which a pinion (25), which is engaged or disengaged with a ring gear of the engine to be started, is formed as an integral part of a drive shaft (15) at an end of the drive shaft which is movable in the axial direction thereof while being rotated an electric motor (11). The engine starter has no restriction as to the root thickness of the pinion or the number of teeth of the pinion, and has a large gear ratio to the ring gear.
