The cigarette packing machine has opto-electric sensors (17,18) within the walls of the guides which guide the cigarettes, to determined whether the cigarettes (10) contain sufficient tobacco and whether the filter (33) is correctly installed. The sensors may be installed in the side walls (13) in the vicinity of at least the ends of the cigarettes. The sensors e.g. receivers, may be oriented so as to point towards the cigarettes which they are to test. The optical transmitters (25) and receivers (17,18) may be aligned at right angles to each other, one being situated in the side walls, the other in the base of the cigarette guide channels. The walls, in the vicinity of the sensors may be of transparent material. The sensors may be installed in blind holes in the transparent parts of the walls. Sensors may be disposed so as to sense two opposite sides of the cigarettes. A number of groups of cigarettes may be sensed, pairs of cigarettes in each guide being sensed at the same time. Each guide may have two pairs of sensors sensing four cigarettes simultaneously, one group sensing one side, the other sensing the opposite side of the cigarettes.
