Prodn. of aq. (meth)acrylate ester copolymer dispersions (I) is carried out by polymerising the monomers in 2 stages of different monomer compsn. and using crosslinking monomers in aq. emulsion at the usual temp. in the presence of the usual emulsifiers and polymerisation initiators, 40-99.5 (wt.)% of the total monomers being polymerised in the first stage and 60-0.5% in the second. The novelty is that 0.5-10% (meth)acrylamidoglycollic acid and/or its methyl ester and/or methyl ether is polymerised in the second stage and 0-1.8% of these amidoglycollic acid cpds. in the first.
