Polyether-alcohols (I) are obtd. by base-catalysed reaction of H-functional starters (II) with lower alkylene oxides. (II) is dimethylol norbornene, alone or in admixture with other H-functional cpds. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are low viscosity, high active centre-content materials used in the prodn. of polymer-polyol intermediates for polyurethanes, the polymer-polyols being obtd. at 80-150 deg. C by reaction of (I) with vinyl monomers (pref. styrene and acrylonitrile) in presence of a radical initiator. The polymer-polyols obtd. from (I) are white, stable fine-particle dispersions which have sufficiently low viscosity to have their solids content increased, e.g. by addn. of melamine to impart flame-proofing to the eventually-obtd. polyurethane flexible foams which also have good fatigue resistance.
