Confronting edges of two lengths of side run web material (10, 11) are joined by grinding a concave surface (12) along each edge, applying adhesive (13) to at least one of the concave surfaces and pressing the concave ground edges together. Desirably the two web lengths to be joined pass parallel to one another through a grinding station past a pair of grinding wheels disposed one above the other and both rotating in the same direction with the axes of the two grinding wheels displaced one from the other by a distance corresponding to the desired overlap (d) of the edge regions in the joined material.
