A method for producing a carbonic acid ester, which comprises reacting an aliphatic alcohol with carbon monoxide and oxygen in the presence of 1/ &cir& a platinum group metal or its salt, 2/ &cir& metal copper, a copper salt or a copper complex, 3/ &cir& at least one member selected from the group consisting of alkali metal salts and alkaline earth metal salts, and 4/ &cir& a 2-hydoxypyridine.
