Vacuum metallising of at least one face of a plastic film so as to obtain a substrate comprising a metal surface, which substrate is sufficiently electrically conductive to permit a uniform electrochemical deposit. The latter is performed by electrochemical plating of at least one metal on the metallised surface from an electrolyte solution so as to obtain a thin metallic film with a metal thickness of between 0.1 and 4 microns. The metallised substrate is chosen so as to be compatible and to facilitate the electrochemical plating stage. The thin metal strip obtained is adherent to and supported by the plastic film. The metal strip can be employed as current collectors for lithium batteries with a polymeric electrolyte, as multilayer film employed as packaging material which is permeable to gases and to moisture, as a screen for light, flexible conductors and the like.
