PURPOSE:To obtain a sialon ceramic composite material having enhanced strength and toughness by using short carbon fibers coated with a metal carbide and a metal nitride as a reinforcing material. CONSTITUTION:The oxide of a group IIIa element is added to beta-sialon powder represented by a formula Si6-zAl2N8-z (where 0<z<=4.2) or a mixture of the beta-sialon with silicon carbide, etc., and they are used as a matrix material. Short carbon fibers coated with a metal carbide and a metal nitride are mixed with the matrix material, this mixture is molded by casting, cold isostatic pressing, injection-molding or other method and the resulting molded body is sintered to obtain a ceramic composite material. The pref. length of the coated short carbon fibers is <=3mm and the pref. amt. of the fibers is <=30vol.% of the amt. of the composite material. |
