PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound having high optical purity in high efficiency by carrying out the asymmetric hydrogenation of a mineral acid salt of a 1-phenyl-3-aminopropanone compound in the presence of a metal complex catalyst containing an optically active phosphinopyrrolidine compound as a ligand. CONSTITUTION:The objective optically active 3-amino-1-phenylpropanol compound mineral acid salt of formula IV can be produced by the asymmetric hydrogenation of a compound of formula III (Ph is phenyl; R<1> and R<2> are H, 1-4C alkyl or benzyl) in the presence of a metal complex catalyst containing a ligand consisting of an optically active phosphinopyrrolidine compound of formula I or formula II [R'' is H, -OCR', -OCOR'' or -CONHR''' (R' to R''' are alkyl or aryl); R<4> is phenyl which may have 1-3 substituents selected from lower alkyl, alkoxy and dialkylamino; R<5> is cyclohexyl], e.g. (2S,4S)-N- methylcarbamoyl-2-diphenylphosphinomethyl-4-dicyclohexylphosphinopyrro lidine. |
