The invention relates to a system and a process for managing magnetic or electronic payment cards containing secret information. The system comprises a payment card (10) held by the user of the system, a portable terminal (20) and a fixed payment terminal (22). The portable terminal (20) enables the holder of the card to enter in situ his confidential code which is stored temporarily after the service provider has entered the amount of the provision.
