PURPOSE:To improve the utilization efficiency and polarized light conversion efficiency of light and to make the brightness of a projection image high. CONSTITUTION:A polarized light source 201, a spherical reflecting mirror 202, a condenser lens 203, a lambda/4 optical phase plate 204, and a polarizing element 205. The polarizing element 205 is constituted by sticking a right-angled triangular prism 211 sectioned in a right-angled triangle shape and a nearly right-angled acute prism 212 which have an equal-area surface in the same shape with one of surfaces containing the right angle of the right-angled prism 211 as shown in a figure and providing a polarized light separating film 213 on the stuck surfaces. Further, the other surface of the surfaces containing the right angle of the right-angled prism 211 is a 1st total reflecting surface 214 and the surface facing the surface of the acute-angle prism 212 is a 2nd total reflecting surface 215. |
