a) Control unit for magnetic tape unit avoiding the reserving of substantial memory space in the main computer in the event of a write error. b) The control unit writes to buffer memory (14) the data, either compressed in a unit forming a physical block, or uncompressed in a unit forming a logic block. The data are next transferred with expansion if they have been compressed. When an error occurs during the writing of the data onto the magnetic tape, the main computer is informed of the maximum block dimension, and of the total capacity of the data. The unwritten data are then fetched from buffer memory (14) in the unit forming a logic block or in the unit forming a physical block. Depending on the case, they are or are not the subject of expansion processing. c) The invention applies to computer systems including a buffer memory and a magnetic tape unit. <IMAGE>
