PURPOSE:To obtain the liquid crystal display element which has a wide visual angle by laminating a phase difference film which has optically uniaxiality and a phase difference film which has negative uniaxiality so that their axes are aligned with each other. CONSTITUTION:This liquid crystal display element is equipped with a liquid crystal cell which has twist-oriented liquid crystal 9 sandwiched between substrates 6 and 7, the phase difference film 2 which has the optically positive uniaxiality, the phase difference film 3 which has the negative uniaxiality, and polarizing plates 1 and 5. This couple of the phase difference films 2 and 3 are arranged adjacently to each other and the directions where the largest refractive indexes are obtained are aligned with each other. Namely, the phase difference film 2 is in relation nx>ny nz and the phase difference film 2 is in relation nz nx>ny, where nz is the refractive index of the phase difference films in the thickness direction, nx is the refractive index in the axial direction, and ny is the refractive index in the film surfaces in the direction perpendicular to the axial direction. For the purpose, the phase difference films 2 and 3 are laminated having the axes aligned with each other to increase nz artificially, thereby satisfying the condition nx>nz>ny for obtaining the largest visual angle. |
