This femoral shaft (1) for a total hip prosthesis intended for primary fixation has a longitudinal profile tapering from the head (2) to the point (3), an overall trapezoidal section, and an ovalised cross-section of the shaft (1). The anterior curvature (8) of the shaft, viewed in a longitudinal plane, coincides with the curvature of the obturator arch of the femur with respect to the acetabulum. The proximal trochanteric/diaphyseal portion (9) of the shaft (1): . is widened in the anteroposterior plane, . and has longitudinal grooves (12, 13) on its two lateral main faces (10, 11). The trochanteric/diaphyseal portion (9) has two longitudinal slots (14, 15) which are parallel and symmetrical and which are open from the anteroposterior face (9) to the anterior face (8), the said slots (14, 15) being of constant and identical cross-section. <IMAGE>
