PURPOSE:To obtain a color display device using a spatial optical modulation element, whose constitution is simple and which excellently attains high resolution, high brightness and high contrast ratio. CONSTITUTION:In write devices 14R, 14G and 14B, a linear light beam by a linear light emitting element is allowed to scan and outputted to be respectively made incident on the spatial optical modulation elements 10R, 10G and 10B, so that image information is written. Reading light beams of primary colors which are restricted in terms of band are respectively made incident on the elements 10R, 10G and 10B through the action of a reading light source 20, filters 22, 24, 28 and 30, and a polarizing light beam splitter 26, optically modulated by liquid crystal in homeotropic orientation, reflected by a dielectric mirror having wavelength selectivity, and projected to a screen 34. |
