A method and a circuit arrangement for suppressing the first ring of telephone sets which are connected to an ancillary device such as a telefax, modem, remote control device or the like, until the call has been accepted by the ancillary device which is in a state of readiness for acceptance. This is done by switchable disconnection of the telephone set from the telecommunication network, feeding the telephone set by means of a standby power source, monitoring the incoming call, and, when ringing is detected, by only connecting the telephone set to the telecommunication line after a delay time has elapsed. As a result, ancillary devices can be addressed without disturbing ringing of the telephone set.
