The clutch plate assembly has a number of friction plates (22) on the outer edge, interdigitated with friction plates (24) attached to the flywheel assembly. The assembly incorporates dampers (30,31) braced between the hub- and outer ring structure of the plate. The dampers operate in both directions, with double pistons. The dampers operate at different forces and are provided with different strengths of return springs. This provides damping for idling speeds as well as normal operating speeds.
