The oscilloscope screen has a horizontal resolution of M, where N, the number of data points is a multiple of M. The original N data points are grouped in an acquisition memory into M groups Gj, j = 1,...,M, of L contiguous data points each, where M x L = N. For each group Gj the maximum and minimum values (maxj and minj, are determined and stored as a pair of values pj in an auxiliary memory. From the M pairs pj, j = 1, ...,M in the auxiliary memory, M display values ej, j = 1,...,M, are selected for storage in a display image memory and for display on a M reson display screen, so that the M values include all extreme value excursion of the original data and represent the original signal essentially undistorted.
