The use is claimed of S-N-(1-azabicyclo(2.2.2)oct-3-yl)-arylamide and thioamide cpds. of formula (I), or N-oxide and/or pharmaceutically acceptable salts, in prepn. of an antischizophrenic and/or antipsychotic agent. In formula X = O or S; R1,R3 = H or 1-4C alkyl; Ar = ohenyl opt. substd. by 1-3 (1-4C)alkoxy gps. and/or by 1 or 2 halogens; a phenyl gp. of formula (Ar1); or a pyrimidinyl gp. of formula (Ar2): R2 = halogen, 4,5-benzo, 1-8C alkoxy, 1-4C alkylcarbonyl, or Am; Am = NH2, NHMe or NMe2; R4 = 1-8C alkyl; n = 1 or 2; and R5 = 1-4C alkyl. Pref. R1,R3 = H, Me or Et; Ar = 4-Am-5-chloro-2-methoxyphenyl. Esp. (I) is S(-)-4-amino-N-(1-azabicyclo(2.2.2)oct-3-yl)-5- chloro-2-methoxybenzamide or salt.
