The invention concerns a process for the decontamination of solid materials, in particular earth, by washing, in several stages, pre-screened particles with water and surface-active agents. The washing process is characterized by a first stage in which the pre-screened particles are batch-processed in a mixer (20) with warm water, saturated steam and surface-active agents and then transferred to a buffer tank (30), and by a second stage in which the particles are washed continuously, with the addition of additional water, in a washing drum (40) and the solids precipitated. The particles are rinsed, if necessary, in a screw conveyor (50). The water is removed mechanically (74) from the sludge precipitated from the aqueous phase in the previous stage and the sludge dried by heating.
