An apparatus for separating fibre and shiv includes a pinned metering rotor (90) and a pinned separation rotor (92) adapted to rotate in opposite directions and having fixed bearing locations, the final separation rotor (92) being adjacent a shroud (100) in which are a plurality of slots (101), and a pinned doffer rotor (97) rotatable in either direction and having a bearing location which is adjustable relative to the separation rotor (92). A shell feed structure (94) at the intersection of the metering rotor (90) and the separation rotor (92) has a surface (95) adjacent the separation rotor (92) substantially parallel to the surface of that rotor, and a surface (96) adjacent the metering rotor (90) having a curvature greater than that of the metering rotor (90).
