The protective device consists of an inflatable cushion which is mounted at the side, on the inside, e.g. above a door of the car. A sensor which detects the impact initiates the inflation. The cushion consists of a double wall fabric strip (2) with a number of cross-strips (4). A gas generating string (3) zig-zags through the sections. ADVANTAGE - Short reaction time.
