The current limiting switch has at least one pair (1,2) of cooperating fixed and movable contacts (4,3) with an auxiliary magnetic field provided so that its axis (14) is perpendicular to the movable contact. The direction of movement of the movable contact extends in the direction of this magnetic field axis, with the contact current direction ensuring that the movable contact is subjected to a repulsion force relative to the fixed contact. Pref. the movable contact comprises a U shaped carrier. This has two contact pads (5) near the ends cooperating with a pair of fixed contact pads carried by a fixed contact carrier with two opposing arms lying either side of a magnet providing the magnetic field.
