Water-dispersible or -sol. polyurethane contain 0.3-30 wt.% of ethylene oxide units, present within terminal or side-chain polyether chains, and also, as further hydrophilic centres, 0.1-120 milli-equivs., w.r.t. 100 g of solid, or carboxylate gps. as structures of formula (I). The total amt. of ethylene oxide units and carboxylate gps. is such that water-solubility or -dispersibility of the polyurethane is assured. In (I), R=1-4C alkyl.
