A method of chemically destroying polychlorinated biphenyls using a sodium-based dehalogenation agent; the destruction is carried out in an inert organic solvent with a dehalogenation agent containing a system of sodium - sodium dihydrido-bis(2-methoxyethoxo)-aluminate in a mutual molar ratio of 10:1 to 1:3, at a temperature of 20 to 200 degrees C, preferably with a content of polychlorinated biphenyls in the reaction mixture not exceeding 15 % by weight.<IMAGE>
