The invention relates to a process for the preparation of fluoroalkylbromide compounds of formula R1-CFY-CH2Br in which R1 is a fluoroalkyl group and Y is F or CF3 or of formula R2 (CFY-CH2Br)b in which R2 is a fluorooxyalkyl radical and b is between 1 and 6: the corresponding alcohol or polyalcohol of formula R1-CFY-CH2OH or R2 (CFY- CH2OH)b is caused to react with a trivalent phosphorus compound and Br2 in the presence of a hexahaloacetone. The new brominated fluorooxyalkyl and fluoropolyoxyalkyl compounds obtained are also claimed.
