This method for the surface treatment of zircon-silicate refractory material to restrict the creation of bubbles on the interface of refractory materials with a glass melt at operating temperatures during the production of glass, during which a reduction substance is applied to the surface of the refractory material as a solution or a suspension in a solution of alkali or alkali free silicate and the concentration of this reduction substance is 0.02 to 0.1 mol of reducing element per 0.01 m2 of the surface of the refractory material. The reducing substance is on its own or in combination with magnesium, aluminium, silicon, metal and manganese either as an independent element and/or as oxides or salts containing the reduction element at the lowest degree of oxidation.<IMAGE>
