In order to coat a web of material (3), in particular a web of paper or cardboard, apparatuses are known that incorporate an applicator (4) and a metering system (12) that are each secured to pivot arms (7, 13), in order to pivot the applicator (4) and the metering system (12) from a maintenance position into the working position on a counter roller (2). According to the present invention, the pivoting mechanism for the applicator (4) and/or for the metering system (12), in addition to the cylinder unit (9, 18) that effects the pivoting from the maintenance into the working position, incorporate a hydraulic piston-cylinder unit (10, 20) that presses the pivot arms (7, 13), from the working position into an intermediate position. Thus, the applicator (4) and/or the metering system (12) can be pivoted very rapidly and precisely into the working position on the counter roller (2) and lowered from this very rapidly and precisely once again.
