A dye-donor element for thermal dye transfer comprising a support having on one side thereof a near-infrared absorbing dye comprising a dithiolene-nickel(II) complex dispersed in a polymeric binder, and on the other side thereof a slipping layer comprising a lubricant, the dye having the formula: wherein each R<1>, R<2>, R<3> and R<4> independently represents a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms; a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group having from 6 to 10 carbon atoms; a substituted or unsubstituted heterocyclic group; or R<1> and R<2> may be combined together with the carbon atoms to which they are attached to form a 5- or 6-membered carbocylic or heterocyclic ring; or R<3> and R<4> may be combined together with the carbon atoms to which they are attached to form a 5- or 6-membered carbocyclic or heterocyclic ring.
