A cyclists helmet comprises an outer shell (1) of a high performance composite material, an inner shock damping shell (21) of foamed plastic and has ventilation channels. An intermediate layer (22) between outer (1) and inner (21) shells acts as both a shock damper and a stiffener and has a structured section consisting of a polyester fibre fabric impregnated with resin. The outer shell (1) is mfd. in epoxy resin reinforced with high modulus polyethylene or aramid fibres. ADVANTAGE - The helmet has low wt. yet retains high wear resistance, high resistance to penetration and gives good load distribution.
