The braking system for a motor vehicle includes at least one front axle brake (1) actuated by a pressure medium, and a front axle braking lining (13,15), and one rear axle brake with (2) at least one rear axle brake lining (6,8). For a defined vehicle load between 70 and 100 per cent of its permitted weight, the ratio of the areas of the front and rear brake lining surfaces is the same as that of the static front and rear axle loads. ADVANTAGE - Wear optimised in partial braking region despite optimised stability operation for given load.
