Functionally testing a rotary vibration damper involves mounting the test object (1) on a table (5) attached coaxially, rigidly and without damping to a torsion rod (7) with defined torsional spring stiffness and supported against flexural vibrations. The object is set into freely decaying natural rotary oscillation and the torsion rod displacement-time characteristic measured, associated with the oscillation amplitudes and evaluated. The measurement is initiated when the object has completed at least five, esp. twenty-five free oscillation periods. When a defined number of successive amplitude values not greater than a threshold has been stored they are passed to the evaluation unit. USE/ADVANTAGE - Rotational shocks of any magnitude can be used to stimulate object under test.
