PURPOSE:To obtain a silicon carbide structural body having hydrophilic function suitable for a catalyst carrier or the like by molding a carbon material, converting the molded body into silicon carbide by the reaction with silicon (compd.), and then immediately treating the body with steam. CONSTITUTION:A carbon material is molded beforehand according to the purpose. Then, silicon or a silicon compd. (e.g. SiCl4) is made to react with this molded body to convert the carbon to silicon carbide, which is immediately treated with steam. Thereby, the surface of the silicon carbide structural body can be converted into SiO2, which has better hydrophilic function compared to SiC. Therefore, when this silicon carbide structural body is used as a catalyst carrier, a hydrophilic catalyst such as alumina, water-soluble compds. of Pt, Rh, etc., can easily be deposited thereon. Since the obtd. catalyst can be heated electrically, it is suitable to be used as a catalyst for purification of exhaust gas from automobiles. |
