The method for detecting an optimised accurate tracking level, monitoring a tracking level variation and outputting a tracking data corresponding to the highest level to maintain a good picture quality, includes generating a number of first tracking data sets each with corresp. digital tracking level values stored in a memory and determining whether the tracking levels are steadily increasing to monitor the variation of the digital tracking level values. If the levels are steadily increasing, the tracking data are increased by predetermined steps with corresp. tracking levels stored in the memory. If the levels are not steadily increasing in the first data generation set, a second set of tracking data is generated and the levels are stored in the memory and continuously monitored.
