Process for reducing a refining catalyst before it is used, the catalyst containing a support and an active phase based on at least one noble or nonnoble metal of the group VIII or the group Ib of the Periodic Classification of the elements, the process consisting: a) in impregnating the catalyst with an organic solution of a reducing agent compound, b) in decomposing the reducing agent compound by heating the catalyst, c) in drying the catalyst thus obtained. The invention is characterised in that a halogenated additive is added with the reducing agent.
