PURPOSE:To provide the magnetic recording medium having excellent electromagnetic conversion characteristics, traveling durability and reliability. CONSTITUTION:A nonmagnetic layer is provided on a nonmagnetic base and further, a magnetic layer is provided thereon. Such magnetic recording medium contains a carbon black which has >=30nm average grain sizes and in which structures are not so much developed and inorg. fillers in its nonmagnetic layer. The surface roughnesses on the nonmagnetic layer and magnetic layer side of this nonmagnetic base and the side opposite therefrom are made nearly the same and the values thereof are specified to >=15nm in center line average height. The sufficient electromagnetic conversion characteristics are obtd. without adversely affecting the surface roughness of the magnetic layer even if the surface roughness of the nonmagnetic base is rough. In addition, the surface roughness on the side opposite from the nonmagnetic layer and magnetic layer of the nonmagnetic base is rough and, therefore, the coefft. of friction is prevented from increasing and the traveling durability and reliability are improved.
