The invention relates to a system for monitoring the movement of a self-steered vehicle on a surface. This system includes in particular means (34, 35) for detecting coded labels (33) for identifying obstacles (21) liable to be located over the vehicle's route. These labels are carried by the obstacles and the means of detection are connected to means (16) for monitoring the movement of the vehicle so as to halt the latter when the detected identification code is a halt code. The monitoring means (16) make it possible to monitor the proper operation of the essential elements of the vehicle and in particular the means (34, 35) for detecting coded labels.
