The machining appts. for preparing the surface of a metal workpiece includes a machining tool, a device which measures the cutting force applied to the workpiece, a memory device, a comparator and an evaluation device. The memory stores a number of patterns of data values used to distinguish the state of the surface from other previously classified states. The comparator compares the force signals with the reference values. The evaluation device derives the surface quality from the results of the comparison. USE/ADVANTAGE - For processing cylindrical metal drum for use as carrier for photoreceptor material in image generator. Shape of ultra-precision machined surface is measured in real-time and fed back to control machining process.
