The present invention is an emergency exit device for a door providing adjustable backset in emergency exit devices of the touch bar type, a touch bar is mounted across the door to be depressed in order to open the door. Adjustable backset is achieved by having the touch bar (12) linked to a driven element adjacent the base plate (30) of the unit and the latch mechanism (14) linked to an activator element (72) also adjacent the base plate. These two elements are coupled by a sliding drive plate (134) having a plurality of sets of apertures spaced along it to receive both elements respectively in a selected set. An exterior operator of specified backset (138a) is provided and connects with a cam (138) adjacent an end of the drive plate to slide the plate when the exterior operator is moved. By selecting the proper set of apertures for the elements the installer can see that the cam is at the proper backset and therefore aligned with the operator.
