The reader comprises a reading CCD scanner with a reading aperture optically covering the width of the bar code to be read. In the region of the reading aperture (8)a mirror is arranged, aligned with, or parallel to it. The mirror is so inclined against the vertical that a user (14) in front of the reader (1) can recognise the position of the strip code (11) in front of the reading aperture.$ Pref. the inclination angle (alpha) of the reading aperture or the mirror is adjustable. The housing (2) of the reader may be fitted on an inclinable support. The mirror typically surrounds the reading aperture, at least partly. The reflective coating of the mirror may have a window in the region of the reading aperture. ADVANTAGE - Low-cost design with rapid and reliable read-out of the bar code.
