The refuse-compressing press uses a skip (17) for the refuse and into which a ram is thrust. The latter is accommodated in a rectangular housing with a supporting base and a door via which the skip is inserted and removed. The door (20) and the other housing walls (41, 42) are pressure-resistant, and with the housing shut bear against the skip walls on all sides. Means are provided (37, 39, 59-62) to widen the open housing and thus aid skip insertion and removal.
