Coolant from the engine is circulated through a water/air heat exchanger (8) associated with a fan (10) whose motor (12) is subject to stepless control from a practically lossless switching regulator (14). The latter may be a DC/DC converter or PWM device linked to an electric or electronic controller (6) responsive to air temp. measurements (50,52) in the passenger compartment and in the air outlet from the heat exchanger (8). A temp. set point (54) may be used with a multifunction switch (56) and time switch (58). ADVANTAGE - Electric power consumption restricted to needs of fan motor.
